The worldwide set-top box IC market, worth nearly $3,300 million in 2010, is a very concentrated market, with the Top 5 vendors accounting for nearly 85% of the total market. This market results from decades of development in the sophisticated ecosystems of the cable and satellite broadcast markets, including hardware manufacturers, conditional access (CA) vendors, middleware manufacturers, regional standards (ATSC, ISDB and DVB), and operators. Other companies are gaining small footholds in this market, including Taiwanese vendors moving over from the consumer electronics and digital television realm and Intel moving in from the PC realm. HiSilicon is manufacturing silicon for some Chinese set-top boxes and some say they are looking to expand to other parts of Asia. We also expect some successful mobile silicon vendors (notably Qualcomm with their recent Atheros acquisition, but also potentially nVidia) to enter the market. This report provides worldwide shipments and revenues of SoC ICs segmented by platform (Cable, Satellite, DTT, IPTV) and geography (North America, Latin America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Middle East-Africa). It describes quantitative and qualitative trends in the SoC markets, including transition to MPEG-4, integration of tuners, integration of home networking components, integration of graphical processing units, market dynamics between IC vendors, box manufacturers and operators, etc.
